Mumbai: 7.9 kg of Smuggled Heroin Seized By Airport Officials

A total 7.9 kg of Heroin was recovered. The illicit international market value of the contraband is above INR 50 crores. The passengers were put under arrest and were later remanded to judicial custody.

Based on specific intelligence developed by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Mumbai Zonal Unit that some narcotic substance is being smuggled into India by passengers traveling from Addis Ababa to Mumbai on November 25, surveillance was mounted by a team of DRI officers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai.

The suspected passengers were identified and intercepted by the team of DRI officers and a thorough search of their baggage led to the recovery of some packets containing light brown powder which were ingeniously concealed inside their trolley bags at Mumbai airport. The powder tested positive for the presence of Heroin.

A total 7.9 kg of Heroin was recovered. The illicit international market value of the contraband is above INR 50 crores. The passengers were put under arrest and were later remanded to judicial custody.

Further investigation in the instant case is under progress to bust the drugs smuggling syndicate behind this.

In a similar incident, last week, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai Zonal Unit seized Cocaine worth around INR 20 crores rupees from a passenger at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). It is pertinent to note that drugs were smuggled into India by a passenger who was traveling from Lagos to the city via Addis Ababa.
