Maharashtra leads in action taken against drug-related cases

As per reports, a total of 72,779 crimes were registered in the country. Maharashtra tops the chart, and is followed by Punjab with 11,536 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 10,198 cases.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), over the last few, weeks, has started tracing and investigating the drug traffickers and related rackets in Mumbai, with regards to Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death case. Following up on the same, the team, as reports suggest, has arrested more than 20 people so far.

However, records state that the team has taken the highest number of actions this year, in comparison to last year's statistics, and this has been reported with regards to the taken against drug-related cases across the state. Reports also include the cases busted by the Mumbai Police.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) statistics for 2019, around 12,418 drug-related crimes have been registered in Mumbai, which includes offenses filed under Special and Local Laws (SLL). Besides this, a total of 14,158 crimes were registered in the state, out of which, 13199 cases were registered for possession of drugs for consumption, while 959 cases were registered for possession of drugs for smuggling.

These figured also include SLL offences and based on the cases, Maharashtra is followed by Punjab with 11,536 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 10,198 cases in total. Under the Narcotics Prevention Act, officials have registered 72,779 crimes in the country, which include 45503 SLLs. Furthermore, 27276 crimes were registered in India with regards to smuggling.

Data reports state that Gujarat has over 2.42 lakh cases - the highest number - with regards to the possession of alcohol. This was followed by Tamil Nadu with 1.55 lakh cases. 

The concerned agencies including NCB have registered 57,867 crimes across the country, and a total of 74,620 people have been arrested, which also includes foreign nationals. In comparison to 2018, the number of cases related to cannabis or weed has increased by 17 per cent in 2019.

Officials state that over 3.43 lakh kilos of cannabis, 4488 kilos of opium, 3572 kilos of hashish, and 686 kg of ephedrine have been seized from across the country.
