Bandra, the home to several Bollywood stars, rich and famous industrialists and businessmen is the tinsel town of Mumbai. Despite being one of the most-plush areas of the city, the Bandra and Andheri stretch was recorded with the most cases of rape.

The region accounts for 199 rape cases registered in 2017, which is roughly one-fourth of the total 752 rape cases registered across Mumbai.

Oshiwara turned out to be one of the most notorious areas with 26 cases and Powai followed with 18. Prime areas like Bandra, Santacruz, and Versova saw 13 cases being registered.

Most of these rape cases were committed under the false pretext of marriage or were registered against live-in partners. In none of these cases, the accused was a stranger, the exception being rape cases involving minors as consent does not matter there.

Advocate Audrey D’Mello, also the director of Majlis, whose organisation has been closely working with the Mumbai Police to sensitise them on the new law for crime against women as part of their program ‘Rahat’, told that they have brought out a standard operating procedure for filing rape cases.

Mumbai Police comments

Mumbai Police spokesman, Deepak Devraj said that the registration figures are high because the region has three police zones within its jurisdiction and offenses are being sincerely registered. Strict action on officers turning away or discouraging rape survivors is also being carried out.
