Mumbai Crime Branch arrested notorious gangster D K Rao on Wednesday in connection with a ransom call of INR 50 lakh which he made to an SRA project consultant, confirmed DCP Dilip Sawant, Crime Branch.

A 1000 Cr SRA project at Antop Hill which was stalled for many years, was thrown open in 2013 after a consultant negotiated. However, in the same year, the consultant who acted as a mediator, started receiving threatening calls under the name of D K Rao who was in jail serving his term.
In July 2016, when D K Rao came out of a jail, the number of threat calls increased. In June 2017, he personally threatened the consultant in Dharavi and was asked to pay INR 50 lakhs as a ransom. Threatened D K Rao then went to Dharavi police with a complaint after which an arrest was made.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating the matter to garner more details. We are sure there must be more complainants who will come forward. Meanwhile, we will interrogate D K Rao who will be in police custody until October 18,” Dilip Sawant, DCP, Mumbai Crime Branch.
D K Rao is a history-sheeter and also has a MCOCA on him. He not only used to make ransom calls from jail but also from outside. He was released on bail in the year 2016 in an extortion case where he was accused of threatening a builder.
