A foreign woman who was trying to smuggle gold worth crores of rupees by hiding it in slippers and jeans was arrested by the Customs department from the Mumbai airport on Tuesday. Gold weighing two and a half kilos has been seized from the woman and its value is more than one crore rupees, the officer said.


The arrested woman has been identified as Maryan Mohammed Nabhasir (25) and is a resident of Nigeria. Nabhasir had arrived in Mumbai from Nigeria via Ethiopia on Tuesday. As the officials of the customs department got suspicious about her, when she was stopped and searched, it was noticed that gold had been hidden in her jeans by creating a special space in the chupa kappa and the sole of her shoes. During the investigation, 25 gold bars and gold ornaments were found in her possession. Its weight is 2296 grams and its price is INR 1 crore 10 lakh, the official said

All the gold was seized and a case was registered against the woman under the Customs Act and she was arrested. The seized gold is 22 carats. The gold bars are about two and a half kilos in weight. Gold ornaments worth around five tolas have also been seized from this woman. A special pocket was created in the jeans and the gold was hidden in it. Gold was also hidden in the shoes, sources said. The gold has been taken into custody after panchnama. The accused woman said in the preliminary inquiry that she had smuggled gold for the first time. The customs department is investigating further in this regard.
