Mumbai cyber police reported on Sunday that fraudsters created a fake Facebook account under the name of Indian Police Service officer Vishwas Nangre Patil. The scammers contacted Patil's connections, asking for information and financial help, using the bogus account.

Patil learnt about the scam from a resident of Nashik on Saturday and immediately reported it to the Mumbai cyber police. During the investigation, the police identified a man impersonating Patil, requesting cash and phone numbers from his contacts. Fortunately, one of Patil's contacts sensed something was not right and quickly called Patil on his mobile phone to inform him of the scam.

Patil warned his connections not to respond or share any information with the fraudsters. Cyber police wrote a letter to Meta Platforms, the company that runs Facebook, to delete the fake profile. The bogus Facebook account has since been deleted.

Patil, who has one lakh Facebook fans, also wrote on a Facebook post, "Someone has set up a phoney account in my name and has been sending odd messages to some of my connections. I'm starting a lawsuit right away. However, kindly refrain from responding or disclosing any information as it is probably a scam."
