The safety of women and senior citizens has become a pressing issue in Maharashtra, with incidents of sexual violence against women seeing a significant rise. According to police statistics for 2024, 2,329 rape cases were reported across five major cities, with Mumbai topping the list.
Mumbai: Leading with 958 cases of rape, an increase from 878 cases last year.
Pune: Second with 439 cases of rape and 613 incidents of molestation reported.
Thane: Ranked third with 397 cases of rape.
Nagpur: At fourth place, reporting 297 rape cases and 499 molestation incidents.
Maharashtra ranks fourth nationally in rape cases despite government assurances of prioritizing women's safety, as per the report by Loksatta. The data highlights a troubling rise in violence, including domestic abuse and molestation, signaling a need for more proactive measures by authorities.
A disturbing pattern emerged, showing that most offenders were known to the victims. These included family members, relatives, husbands, boyfriends, and acquaintances. Cases of abuse by in-laws, including brothers-in-law and fathers-in-law, were also reported. Additionally, incidents of pre-marital relationships turning abusive further underline the need for stringent safeguards.
The alarming data underscores the urgency for enhanced police efforts and stronger protective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of women in the state.
