A recent data has revealed mixed trend in crimes against women in Mumbai. The city has experienced an overall decrease of 5 per cent in crimes during the first four months of 2023, compared to the same period in 2018. According to the statistics, crimes like molestation have witnessed a significant decrease of 15 per cent.

However, there was a rise in rape and kidnapping instances by 7 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. A common factor identified in kidnapping cases is the elopement of teenagers.

This has led to the mandatory filing of a First Information Report (FIR) in cases where a minor goes missing. Swift and severe legal action has proven to be a crucial deterrent in ensuring the safety and security of women in Mumbai.

The decline in overall crimes can be attributed to the efforts made by law enforcement to conduct extensive drives against repeat offenders. Additionally, targeted patrolling in areas where women commute and study has helped create a safer environment. Moreover, crackdowns on drug addicts have contributed to this.

In addition to legal action, the establishment of counselling centres throughout different police districts has played a vital role in handling cases of domestic abuse and marital conflict. These centres provide a safe space for victims to seek support, guidance, and assistance in navigating their difficult situations.

This holistic approach, combining law enforcement efforts with emotional support, has contributed to the decline of 26 per cent in dowry-related maltreatment by spouses. From January to April 2023, a total of 1,977 incidents of crime against women were reported, marking a decrease from the previous year's 2,078 offences. The detection rate for crimes against women has also seen an improvement, rising from 65% to an impressive 74 per cent.
