Nephew booked for extorting a ransom of INR 1 crore from a retired officer of MIDC

It has come to light that a retired officer of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) was extorted for a ransom of one crore rupees by his own nephew. The name of the extortionist is Mangesh Thorat (29) and the complainant is his maternal uncle. He had given some contract documents to Mangesh. He had extorted the ransom by threatening to hand over this document to the Anti-Corruption Department. Thane Police has arrested Mangesh in this case.


The complainant is 59 years old and was working as Chief Engineer in MIDC. Currently he is retired. His wife was also working as an executive engineer in MIDC. She has also resigned from the post. The complainant of Mangesh Thorat is his maternal uncle. The complainant's wife had paid INR 61 lakh to Mangesh to run the business. He had also invested INR 1 crore 25 lakh with Puneet Kumar residing in Uttar Pradesh. As Punit Kumar was not paying the invested money, he asked Mangesh Thorat to withdraw the money. He was also given some money in return. Also the agreement with Puneet and some documents were given.

But Mangesh started misusing these agreements and documents. He saved the conversation with the complainant's wife and started threatening her to lodge a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Also, he demanded another one crore rupees so as not to ask for the 61 lakh rupees given to him. A few days ago, the complainant filed a complaint against Mangesh with the Anti-Extortion Squad. According to this complaint, Mangesh was detained by the anti-extortion squad while receiving extortion money in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon. A case has been registered in Naupada police station and the police have arrested him.
