Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Thursday called on for strict legal police action against people who are trying or will try to evade the quarantine. This comes after several cases were reported of people, at risk to have contracted the coronavirus or COVID-19, using public transport.

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the Maharashtra government has urged the people across the state to avoid non-essential travel in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The BMC is stamping people’s hands with voting ink at the international airport, to identify those who will be undertaking self-quarantine or home quarantine.

The passengers coming from abroad have been asked to undergo self-quarantine or home quarantine for at least 14 days. In order to stop the spread of the deadly virus, it is important to self-isolate if one is at risk of having contracted the coronavirus

“Following repeated instances of people fleeing quarantine/isolation, the Home Ministry constrained to ask Maharashtra to act against such offenders endangering themselves and everyone else under the Epidemic Diseases Act,” Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh tweeted on Thursday.

The Epidemic Diseases Act which dates back in 1897 has been invoked by the central government amid the coronavirus pandemic. The act is nearly 123 years old and was drafted by the British government.

Earlier, the Maharashtra cabinet had decided to not suspend the local train services but said that non-essential travels will lead to the shut down of Mumbai’s lifeline.

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Thursday reiterated that currently the state was in stage 2 of the coronavirus outbreak and steps were being taken to ensure that it doesn’t reach stage 3.
