On Wednesday, January 27, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Rana Kapoor, Yes Bank founder in a fresh money laundering case linked to an alleged INR 4,300 crore fraud at the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank in Maharashtra.
According to reports, Kapoor, 63, was already in judicial custody after he was arrested by the central probe agency in March 2020 in connection with alleged financial irregularities and purported kickbacks paid to him and his family members in lieu of certain loans provided by the Yes Bank to a number of high-profile borrowers.
Earlier on January 23, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested two people following raids on the premises of a firm promoted by a Maharashtra MLA for alleged illegal diversion of bank funds in connection with the PMC Bank fraud and money laundering case. Mehul Thakur, managing director of the Viva Group, and Gopal Chaturvedi, a chartered accountant, were arrested under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after the raids.
The action was taken against the two as they were allegedly not cooperating in the investigation. Furthermore, the ED sought their custody when they were touted to appear before a local court in Mumbai on January 23 the sources said.
On the other hand, on January 22, the ED conducted raids at five locations in the office premises of Directors of the Viva Group in Vasai -Virar, Palghar in connection with the PMC bank scam case. During the raid, INR 73 lakh cash, incriminating digital and documentary evidence were recovered during the operation.
