Mumbai Police took to Twitter to share the news and offered their prayers to the deceased - Chandrakant Pandurkar (57) and Sandip Surve (52).

57-year-old Mumbai Police constable, Chandrakant Pendurkar passed away on Saturday while undergoing treatment for coronavirus. Pendurkar was posted at the Vakola police station and had tested positive for COVID-19 a few days back.

He became the first Mumbai Police personnel to have succumbed to COVID-19, and was a resident of Worli, which has been adversely affected by the pandemic. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.

On  April 26, Mumbai Police took to Twitter to share the news of another Mumbai Police constable, Sandip Surve (52) who passed away on Sunday. They offered their condolences to the deceased.

Close to 96 policemen and policewomen in Mumbai have tested positive for COVID-19 so far. Out of these, 81 were reported to be constables and the remaining 15 were officers. As per official figures, seven Mumbai Police personnel who had tested positive for Coronavirus, have recovered until now.

The Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, Shri Param Bir Singh informed that the city had lost two brave souls to the COVID-19 pandemic in the span of two days.

Mumbai has emerged as the worst-affected area in Maharashtra, the state with the most number of cases in the country. As of April 25, Maharashtra had recorded 7,118 cases of coronavirus with 4,447 cases being registered from Mumbai.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Mumbai Police officials have been patrolling the streets in the city to ensure that lockdown regulations are not flouted. However, being on the front line of the fight against the pandemic puts the police personnel at risk.
