Bhima Koregaon Case: Pune Police arrests activist Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves

Earlier, on August 28, Pune police had arrested five activists across the country in connection with an FIR lodged following ‘Elgaar Parishad’ event.

On Friday, Pune Police arrested activists, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves, after their period of house arrest ended on October 26. Earlier, on August 28, Pune police had arrested five activists across the country in connection with the Bhima Koregaon Violence and their alleged connections with the banned group - Communist Party of India (Maoist). Accordingly, the Pune Police charged these five activists under the Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA).

Vernon has been arrested from Andheri whereas Ferreira was detained from Thane. Along with them, Sudha Bharadwaj too was kept under house arrest in regards to the Bhima-Koregaon incident. Earlier today, Pune Sessions Court rejected the bail of the three activists and accordingly, the police will conduct an investigation after they have arrested them.

The five arrested accused including human right activists and lawyers – Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha – have been under house arrest since August 28. A bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra reserved the judgment on September 20 in regards to this matter extending their house arrest until October 26. 

Meanwhile, the activists had filed a plea for bail at Pune Sessions court which was rejected. Pune police made their move and arrested the two from their respective houses.
