Four people were injured and at least 45 people have been arrested in violence erupted in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, police said on Thursday, March 30.

The violence took place on Tuesday night, March 28, around 9:30 pm after a clash broke out between two groups over playing music outside a Mosque while Namaz was going on in the Paldhi area of Maharashtra's Jalgaon District. Some vehicles including a police car were also damaged in the riots.

Two first information reports have been registered on charges of rioting and assaulting government officials. The situation is peaceful and under control now, said M Rajkumar, Jalgaon SP.

Condemning the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said: “It is an unfortunate incident, efforts are on to bring peace, some people are trying to worsen the situation. Leaders should be careful how they behave in such times. Some leaders are making statements for selfish reasons, they shouldn't do it.”

The police superintendent claimed that the music was shut down when the procession crossed the mosque. However, when the music was restarted after the procession crossed the mosque.

While locals alleged that the houses of Muslims were looted and the property was damaged, the police denied the charges.

Reports claimed that the SP and other senior district police officials were in the town, which is 14 kilometres from Jalgaon, at the time of the incident. But the situation was soon brought under control.
