A 26-year-old State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) constable allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his service weapon while on guard duty at Lok Bhavan in South Mumbai's high-security Malabar Hill area on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Kaustubh Sangle, a resident of Nashik district, who was attached to the SRPF Group-16 (Kolhapur).
Incident Discovered During Shift Change
According to police sources, the incident took place around 8:30 PM inside a designated security room at Lok Bhavan. The tragedy came to light when Sangle’s colleague arrived to relieve him for the standard three-hour shift rotation and found him lying in a pool of blood. Sangle had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and died on the spot.
Upon receiving the information, senior police officials, along with a team from the Malabar Hill Police Station and forensic experts, rushed to the VIP security zone. The police took possession of the body for an autopsy and seized the weapon a 7.62 mm Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) used in the incident.
Investigation Points to One-Sided Romance
While no suicide note was recovered from the scene, initial investigations have pointed toward a personal motive. An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at the Malabar Hill Police Station. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
