Activists’ Arrest: Supreme Court extends house arrest of five activists till September 17

Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the house arrest of five activists arrested, for their alleged links with Maoists and their connection with the Bhima-Koregaon Violence, till September 17. The apex court was hearing a petition filed against the arrest of five activists and lawyers including Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira, Gautam Navlakha, and Vernon Gonsalves.

After it was submitted that Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was busy with another court, a bench led by Chief Justice Deepak Misra adjourned the hearing on the petition till September 17. The plea was filed by Romila Thapar, Devaki Jain, Prabhat Patnaik, Satish Deshpande and Maja Daruwala on behalf of the arrested activists.

Earlier on August 28, Pune police arrested five activists across the country in connection with an FIR lodged following ‘Elgaar Parishad’ event. Pune Police charged these five activists under Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA).

However, the apex court ordered Maharashtra Government to put them under house arrest rejecting the demand of its police to take the arrested accused into police custody.
