An e-challan issued for a traffic infringement helped police track down a stolen scooter, leading to the arrest of a man in Thane. Since the rider was not wearing a helmet, the traffic police fined him, and the original owner, who received notification of the violation, reported it to the police. The traffic police moved quickly, and within two hours, they had located and taken the offender into custody.
The Thane traffic police's Kasarvadavli team was positioned at Nagla Bunder on the evening of June 15, as per the police report. Yogesh Sanap, assistant police inspector, and members of the Kasarvadavli traffic section were part of the team that was on the scene prosecuting infringers. When a scooter rider (MH 48 BU 2617) was found to be operating the vehicle without a helmet, traffic inspectors fined them. The owner resides in Dombivli, to whom the e-challan message was addressed.
In 2023, he had previously reported the theft of the bike to the Manpada police station in Dombivli. He went up to the police and told them about the e-challan that was being issued. When the Manpada police examined the e-challan, they discovered that the Kasarvadavli traffic unit had taken the appropriate measures. Thus, they came to us, and we gave them the information, said API Sanap.Sanap claims that as soon as they had any suspicion that the person might be close, the team moved quickly to take action. He claimed that after a two-hour search, the crew was able to locate him with the use of technological specifications and their local network. The theft and the scooter were located on Thane's Ghodbunder Road. The guy was taken into custody, and the bike was seized. According to him, he was also turned over to the Manpada police, who are looking into the incident.
Umesh Thakur, 38, a resident of Jharkhand, has been identified by the police as the suspect. He was renting a room on Ghodbunder Road. According to a police official, Thakur damaged one side of the license plate after the robbery, but the traffic police team was able to match the missing digit and issue the e-challan. For the past year, he has been riding around on the bike.
A similar incident was reported in December 2023. A senior citizen had parked his two-wheeler outside a shop in Kandivali and had left the keys in his bike as he was supposed to be back in a few minutes. By the time the man got back, his two-wheeler was not there at the place he parked. For months, officials had no leads to pursue until they received an e-challan on the registered phone number. The e-challan had the scooter thief's unclear photo. From that e-challan the officials got a lead and investigated the matter until the thief was arrested.
