In Mumbai, two fruit vendors were arrested after a viral video surfaced showing them allegedly applying rat poison to fruits for sale in the Malad West area. The footage revealed one of the vendors smearing a chemical substance locally known as “Ratol” on the fruits, a practice that experts say poses serious health risks to consumers.
The police from Malad Police Station acted on a complaint filed by a local resident and detained the accused, identified as Manoj Sangamlal Kesarwani (42) and Rahul Sadanlal Kesarwani (25), both residents of Rajanpada in Malad West. The stall was sealed, and a bottle of the toxic poison was confiscated.
According to police, the accused admitted they applied the substance to prevent rats from damaging the fruits overnight. However, using rat poison on edible items is both dangerous and illegal. A case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to food adulteration and acts endangering life, and both men have been sent to judicial custody while the investigation continues.
