Advisor to state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) Chairman Ajoy Mehta’s is under the IT scanner for a flat he owns in the plush Nariman Point area of South Mumbai.

The Income Tax Department has alleged that its previous owner was a “shell entity made only for the purpose of holding benami properties”.

According to reports, Ajoy Mehta’s flat deal at Nariman Point has come under the scanner of the Income Tax department’s benami section.

The said flat is on the fifth floor of Samata Co-operative Housing Society on General Jagannath Bhosale Marg near Mantralaya. Ajoy Mehta in February was appointed as MahaRera Chairman.

Former IAS officer had purchased the flat, which is about 1,076 square feet, last year for INR 5.33 crores from a company called Anamitra Properties Private Limited, which in turn acquired the same in the year 2009 for INR 4 crores.

In the preliminary probe by IT department, it came to light that the two shareholders of the company live in a small chawl in Mumbai. They have been identified as Kamesh Nathuni Singh, who doesn’t have IT returns that have been filed, and Shyam Narayan Yadav, who lives in a chawl near Oberoi Mall, Western Express Highway.

This led to the suspicion that its shareholders are people with very low income and didn’t have the capacity to purchase properties worth crores such as this flat.

However, he said the deal was legal and the proper procedures were followed.

Meanwhile, the IT department has provisionally attached the property and issued a show cause notice to the firm that sold the property to Mehta in a multi-crore deal.
