The Wadhawan brothers - Kapil and Dheeraj - who were detained by Mahabaleshwar Police for violating lockdown rules and were booked for negligence - have issued a statement stating that they had to travel due to the health issues faced by them and their 70-year-old mother. 

The statement was issued by their legal firm which narrated that Wadhawan brother - accused in DHFL and Yes Bank fraud cases - said that they were not absconding while claiming that they had been in correspondence with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). 

The Wadhawan brother, in their statement, said that they had given reasons for not joining the probe being carried out by ED and CBI. Earlier, there were report claiming that Wadhawan brothers who were found in Mahabaleshwar were on a run after their names came up in the investigation in connection with the Yes Bank fraud case. 

However, CBI earlier mentioned that it had got a non-bailable warrant issued against Wadhawans, as both the brothers did not join the probe. 

Earlier, on April 9, the Wadhawan family and their friends got special permission from Principal Secretary (Home) Amitabh Gupta to travel from Khandala to Mahabaleshwar amid the nationwide lockdown. 

The Mahabaleshwar Police later found 23 people in a farmhouse and registered an FIR for violating lockdown rules amid the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has sent Gupta on compulsory leave and will probe the IPS officer’s role in the Wadhawan family controversy. 

In a video statement earlier, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh stated that Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Manoj Saunik will conduct the investigation involving IPS Amitabh Gupta.
