Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Friday said that the state government will investigate Principle Secretary Amitabh Gupta’s role in connection with the Wadhawan family controversy.

The Wadhawan family and their friends, consisting of 23 members, were placed under institutional quarantine and two members - Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan - were detained by Mahabaleshwar police for violating the lockdown rules amid the coronavirus outbreak.

A letter was leaked in the media which had the signature of Principal Secretary (special) Amitabh Gupta of Maharashtra Health Department allowing the 23-member Wadhawan family and five vehicles to travel to Mahabaleshwar for “family emergency”.

Mahabaleshwar Police found 23 people at a farmhouse including the members of Wadhawan family. Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan - the accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud cases - were detained by the police.

In a video statement, Anil Deshmukh stated that Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Manoj Saunik will conduct the investigation involving IPS Amitabh Gupta. The Wadhawans have been booked under sections 188, 269, 270, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act and section 11 of the COVID-19 regulations.

Since Amitabh Gupta is an IPS officer, the state government sent Gupta on compulsory leave with immediate effect. Deshmukh took this decision after discussing the same with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

"As per discussion with Hon. CM, Mr Amitabh Gupta, Principal Secretary (special), has been sent on compulsory leave with immediate effect, till the pending of enquiry, which will be initiated against him. #LawSameForEveryone," Anil Deshmukh tweeted.
