DHFL promoters Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan detained for violating coronavirus lockdown rules

A total of 23 members from the Wadhawan family have been detained at their farmhouse in at Mahabaleshwar. As per reports, Principal Home Secretary Amitabh Gupta had given them the permission to travel from Khandala to Mahabaleshwar despite the lockdown.

On one hand, where the state and central government officials are trying hard to tackle the coronavirus outbreak by imposing strict regulations, there are some members in the public, who fail to understand the importance of these decisions. But what's rather shocking is when educated people, who run successful businesses, break the laws that have been put in place for their own safety and that of the society.

In a recent report, Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan, promoters of the popular Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL), have been detained by Maharashtra police for violating the orders amidst the lockdown. As per information released by the police, 23 members of the Wadhwan family were detained at their farmhouse in at Mahabaleshwar.

Reports also state that the citizens from the Mahabaleshwar area got to know about the same and they were not happy with their arrival. This was taken to the local police, who too further action.  

A senior official of Mahabaleshwar police station said that they were detained at Satara district on Thursday, April 9, 2020, and all 23 members have been booked under section 188 of IPC, owing to the disobedience of lawful order of public servant.

It is said that on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, the entire family travelled from Khandala to Mahabaleshwar in many cars, despite the district borders of Pune and Satara being sealed due to the coronavirus lockdown. Officials are trying to investigate the matter further regarding the permissions received by them to travel between these districts.

Addressing the same, State Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh, in a conversation with ABP Majha said that such permissions are given only in an emergency. He further clarified that Principal Home Secretary Amitabh Gupta had issued the letter to the Wadhwans, giving them the permission to travel. Deshmukh took to Twitter to also mentioned that the team will conduct a probe to understand the matter and necessary actions will be taken regarding the same. Officials will collect the information on Friday, April 11, 2020, keeping the protocol in mind. The matter will also be discussed soon with CM Uddhav Thackeray.

This matter has stirred the opposition party in Maharashtra where members from BJP have raised questions regarding the permission. Former CM Devendra Fadnavis has sought a reply from Uddhav Thackeray. Another known member of BJP, Kirit Somaiya, on the other hand, has blamed the current government for giving permission and offering VVIP treatment to such high-profile citizens.

Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan were spotted at their farmhouse and are currently accused in Yes Bank and DHFL fraud cases.
