Hemant Nagrale, the state's director general of police who has been appointed to replace Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh is a native of Bhadravati in Chandrapur district.

The Senior IPS officer completed his education up to 6th standard in a Zilla Parishad school at Bhadravati. After that, he took further education at Patwardhan High School in Nagpur. Nagrale is a mechanical engineer who is a 1987 batch police officer.

His first posting was in the Naxal-affected area of Rajura in Chandrapur district. From 1992 to 1994, he was the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Solapur. When he was the Ratnagiri District Superintendent of Police, he had handled the land acquisition case related to Dabhol Energy Company from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 1998, while holding various posts in the Superintendent of Police, CID and Crime Branch, he had investigated the state-wide MPSC paper leak case.

In 2016, Nagrale was the Commissioner of Police of Navi Mumbai. At that time, the case of robbery at the Bank of Baroda was in news. A team led by Nagarale took up the matter in just two days.

During the four years from 1998 to 2002, Nagrale served as the CBI's SP and later as the DIG. During the same period, they have investigated the famous Ketan Parekh scam worth INR 130 crores, the Harshad Mehta scam worth INR 400 crores and the Madhopura Cooperative Bank scam worth INR 1,800 crores.

Hemant Nagarale was the Special Inspector General of MSEDCL at the time of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. During the attack, Nagarale entered the Hotel Taj and was responsible for evacuating the injured and scared. He then pulled out a bag full of RDX from the Taj and kept it in a safe place before calling the bomb squad.
