An official on Thursday, April 1, announced that the steam engine of the first passenger train in 1853 will be installed on the grounds of Thane railway station.

The first passenger train in India ran from Mumbai (Bori Bunder) to Thane on April 16, 1853, and covered a distance of 34 kilometres.

Speaking to reporters, Thane MLA Sanjay Kelkar said it was apt to install the engine at Thane, where history was created several years ago. Similarly, all historical monuments in the city and district would be preserved in the coming days.

The first train journey, which carried around 400 passengers, took one hour and 15 minutes, he added.

According to the official website of the Indian Railways, the first railway on the Indian sub-continent ran over a stretch of 21 miles from Bombay to Thane. The idea of a railway to connect Bombay with Thane, Kalyan and with the Thal and Bhore Ghats inclines first occurred to George Clark, the Chief Engineer of the Bombay Government, during a visit to Bhandup in 1843.
