The first railway in Asia ran from Bori Bunder (present day Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to Thane on April 16, 1853. 171 years have passed since this event, and the Indian Railways network is expanding successfully. In 1853, exactly 171 years ago today, India marked a significant milestone in transportation history.


From the first train in April 1853 to the modern Vande Bharat Railway trains, the journey of Indian Railways has taken place. During this period some old trains like 1st Shatabdi Express, 1st Jan Shatabdi Express, 1st Tejas Express and Punjab Mail are running even after 100 years and the passenger response is continuously increasing. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which operated the first train, merged with the Indian Midland Railway Company in 1900.

The boundaries of this company extended to Delhi in the north, Kanpur and Allahabad in the northeast and from Nagpur in the east to Raichur in the southeast. On November 5, 1951, the Central Railway was formed by amalgamating the railways of the Nizam State, Scindia State and Dholpur State. Presently, with five divisions namely Mumbai, Bhusawal, Nagpur, Solapur and Pune, Central Railway covers more than 4,275 route km in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka and provides Central Railway services at as many as 466 stations in these states.


117 years of Neral-Matheran mini train

The construction of the Neral-Matheran Railway started in 1904 and the two foot gauge line was opened for traffic in 1907. During the rainy season, this route was closed for safety reasons.
