On Thursday, January 20, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that all schools in Mumbai that include pre-primary grades will reopen from Monday, January 24, reports stated. Earlier on Thursday, the Maharashtra government had approved the reopening of schools throughout the state on Monday. The state empowered the local administrations to undertake the final call in accordance with the COVID-19 condition in their vicinity.

Aaditya Thackeray, Mumbai guardian minister tweeted that Mumbai schools from pre-primary to the 12 grade will open from Monday with COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

According to accounts, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal stated that all schools in Mumbai will reopen from Monday, with officials from the civic authority adding that a comprehensive list of SOPs will be issued.

The Maharashtra school education department had proposed to the state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to reopen schools in the state, January 24 onwards and he provided his consent on Thursday.

Based on narratives on Thursday night, the BMC issued guidelines for the reopening of schools on Monday. In the circular signed by the BMC Education Officer, Rajesh Kankal, the civic authority remarked that those parents who will be sending their wards to schools will have to submit a written consent letter to the school authorities.

The guidelines added that apart from offline classes, online classes will continue following the routine. The BMC also said that all eligible students should be vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccines at the earliest by organizing vaccination camps with school premises.

The civic body has also ordered that those teaching and non-teaching staff appointed for verification of COVID-19 vaccination certificates at railway stations and BMC offices should be told to report back to school at the earliest.

The government has urged parents to not send their children to schools if they are unwell. Schools, on the other hand, have been asked to ensure isolation facilities if students show symptoms.

Schools in the state commenced in-person classes on December 15, 2021. Later there was a Christmas break from December 23 and schools were to resume on January 3. However, they were asked to function virtually till January 31, by the BMC due to the rise in coronavirus cases. On January 8, the Maharashtra government announced that schools could not hold offline classes till February 15 in light of the restrictions it brought into force.
