The Directorate of Higher Education has decided to distribute Bhagavad Gita books in 100 NAAC accredited A/A+ colleges. Likewise, the Higher Education Director of Mumbai has instructed all non-government aided colleges in the city to get their sets of the Hindu holy book.

With an aim to make students read Bhagavad Gita, the Directorate of Higher Education decided to distribute the books. The Mumbai’s Joint Director of Higher Education has ordered the colleges to take their sets. However, this directive is creating chaos amongst colleges over the religion issue.

Various students’ organisation believes that the atmosphere of educational institutions should be secular and no lessons should be taught over any religion. Therefore, the government should reconsider their decision.

Ideally, the state government should see to it that every college gets NAAC accreditation rather than distributing sets of Bhagavad Gita. This decision is ridiculous. Instead of this, the state government should give a set of our Indian Constitution as this would set a good example of a progressive state,” Aashish Gade, President, Republican Vidyarthi Sena.
