Non-profit organisation, Praja Foundation recently conducted a survey, which revealed some staggering facts about Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools. 257 BMC schools have shut down and the enrollment rate in the last decade has reduced by 59 per cent. It was 67,477 in the academic year 2009-2010 which has reduced to 27,918 in 2018-19.

According to the State of Municipal Education in Mumbai, 41 schools have been shut in 2018 which is the highest in the decade. The Managing Trustee of Praja Foundation Nitai Mehta stated that the retention rate in BMC schools was at 90.5 per cent in the academic year 2010-11 whereas the same figure stands at a mere 22.3 per cent in 2018-19. She further stated that for every 100 students that were enrolled in Class 1 in BMC schools, only 22 of them stay in school till class 10.
Another survey by Hansa Research has stated that 87 per cent of parents wanted to enroll their kids in private schools from BMC schools due to better health facilities, first aid, stationery and clean toilets.
