Senior officials at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in a review meeting on Monday, September 20, directed 24 ward officers to intensify COVID-19 testing in their areas.

The  10-day Ganapati festival ended on Sunday, and the civic body wants to ensure that the spread of possible infection is contained at the earliest.

Reportedly, officials have said that they will be targeting the areas where a large number of people had travelled outside Mumbai and are now returning after the festival.

The Assistant Commissioner, Prithviraj Chavan of K-West Ward, while addressing the situation, said the senior officials of BMC has asked them to carry an RT-PCR test on individuals who are returning to the city. He further said that they are shortlisting localities in each ward, and healthcare workers will visit every house asking people to get tested who have returned after traveling. He stated that K/West Ward, Versova would be one such locality where they will increase the testing.

As per reports, the city's daily positivity rate had spiked to 1.7 per cent on September 15, and the daily testing numbers have fallen below 30,000 since the beginning of the Ganapati festival.

Aaditya Thackeray, the guardian minister for Mumbai suburbs, has asked BMC to verify offices and buildings that claim to be fully vaccinated.

A few days back, BMC had decided to fast-track the work on oxygen plants as the city is likely to witness a possible third wave of coronavirus next month.
