On Tuesday, November 24, the Bombay High Court directed the Maharashtra government to clarify its stand by Thursday, November 26, with regards to why the first-year junior college (FYJC) admissions have not been concluded yet.

The division bench consisting of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni asked as to why the admissions had not been concluded and were being postponed for over two and a half months. Moreover, the judges pointed that the petition regarding the same was first heard on October 27 and later on November 9, however, no positive response has come up from the state government in spite of it. As a result, the court has directed the government lawyer to file an affidavit by Thursday in order to clarify the government’s stand.

As per reports, the government officials had earlier stated that admissions to first-year junior college in the state are likely to resume after Diwali vacations. These admissions were put on hold earlier due to the interim stay by the Supreme Court on Maratha quota in jobs and education. As the education department of Maharashtra had announced the Diwali break between November 7 and 20 for schools and junior colleges in the state, it was expected that the government will give this issue a fresh look after this break ends, however, it is yet to comment on the same.

Currently, more than 14.3 lakh students from Maharashtra have filled the admission form for FYJC, out of which more than 11.5 lakh have sought admission in the first round. The next round will focus on the remaining 2.79 lakh students who are waiting for the same.
