On Monday, the Bombay High Court suggested that a devoted education channel on television be made for students who have internet issues. This becomes especially important during the coronavirus pandemic since students are learning online.

According to reports, Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni proposed the suggestion to the centre as well as the state. This occurred when the judiciary was hearing a PIL filed by the National Association for the Blind, whose advocate enunciated how visually impaired students face connectivity issues in the hinterland and thus are at a risk to lose an academic year.

To this, the state’s advocate responded that online classes are being conducted for the challenged students in the hinterland through online applications and home visits. CJ Datta then spoke about internet issues in the rural areas and asked why the National Council of Educational Research and Training doesn’t consider curating a television channel solely dedicated to education on Doordarshan.

The judiciary recommended the use of television and radio that are satellite operated, in addition to mobile networks. Since every house in the rural area has a television, with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha having their channels, coupled with judicial proceedings expected to go live soon, addressing student’s education is paramount.

The judges recommended that the Centre and State should collectively consider delivering education through Doordarshan and Akashvani. Narratives also claim that the judiciary mentioned how the channel should help the challenged as well as those without disabilities.

The state has been asked to respond on Thursday.
