CISCE: Class X and XII Students Will Not Be Forced to Take Exams

CISCE: Class X and XII Students Will Not Be Forced to Take Exams

In response to public interest litigation filed by Advocate Arvind Tiwari with the Bombay High Court, the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has said that it will give Class X and XII students the option to take examinations in July or decide to use the marks provided during internal assessment for grading. The examinations are scheduled to take place between July 2 - 12 for Class X students and between July 1 - 14 for Class XII pupils.

Other metrics like performance on pre-board examinations as well as internal assessments conducted by the schools of the student may also be factored into the scoring of a student. This effectively provides an alternative to the students rather than being forced onto a single option. Counsel for the CISCE, Darius Khambata gave out the information to a bench consisting of Justice S S Shinde and Chief Justice Dipankar Datta.

The counsel for the CISCE also added that students have until June 22 to decide which direction they will take. Advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhakoni noted that this proposal seems fair while opining that the logistics of the examinations can be managed based on the number of students willing to take the exams.

Tiwari’s original petition sought the CISCE to set aside the rescheduled May 22 examination and to use internal assessment as a metric to grade students. Interestingly, Tiwari also happens to be the father of a Class X student.

Those fighting on behalf of the students also welcomed this move by the CISCE and offered to give suggestions on grading and marks. Advocate Tiwari mentioned that the grading system should be liberal.

While the CISCE has rejected the suggestions of parents and counsel with regard to marks and grading, the court said that it should listen to all suggestions. Additionally, the court has asked CISCE to publicly post the new decision on English, Marathi, and Hindi newspapers across the state.
