Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray has said that his government will be setting up an expert committee to evaluate and study the National Education Policy (NEP) that was announced by the Central Government.

This committee will consist of experts and scholars in the education department from across Maharashtra and will go through the current laws that may require changing so as to accommodate the Centre’s new education policy.

The decision to form an expert committee was taken during a meeting chaired by the CM with Marathi Language Minister Subhash Desai, School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray also in attendance along with officials from the related agencies.

The CM has reportedly asked the State Education Department to consider starting the academic year in January instead of June so as to make up for the lost time due to the coronavirus pandemic

Further, Thackeray has asked officials to clear out obstacles that come in the way of online learning for students, while the School Education Minister has asked the department to consider reopening of in-person learning for Class 10 students at the very least.

“The new education policy has many new concepts which will require changes in the existing laws. The inevitable changes will have to be welcomed, while steps will have to be taken to weed out the difficulties in its implementation. Students should be enabled to ask more and more questions, to push their curiosity. The policy needs to be implemented by keeping all aspects, including technical education, vocational courses and education in mother tongue in mind,” the CM said.
