In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, on Tuesday, June 29, Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant announced a waiver of fees for students whose parents have succumbed to the coronavirus.

Moreover, other fees which are charged for courses in aided colleges and universities have also been waived which includes gymkhana fees, activity fees, fees for college books, funds for computer and sports and medical aid funds. Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdowns, several citizens have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. Therefore, while welcoming the decision, students have also asked for a reduction in fees for the academic year 2020-2021.

Meanwhile, talking about the new academic year, Samant stated that the Maharashtra Health and Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) for professional courses will be conducted by the end of July to meet the September deadline set by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for starting the new session.

On the other hand, the University of Mumbai (MU) is said to soon offer an engineering course in Marathi. Moreover, on Tuesday, June 29, the academic council of MU cleared all the proposals with regard to the new initiatives that are to be undertaken by the university.

According to reports, undergraduate commerce subjects will have credits for research. Moreover, new subjects such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning will figure in the fresh course offerings.
