Considering the rising number of coronavirus cases in the state, Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh on Thursday asked Dilip Mhaisekar, the vice-chancellor of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) to postpone final examinations that might endanger the lives of medical students in the. The Minister took to Twitter to express his views after the Nashik-based University scheduled its examinations from the first week of August.

Deshmukh said in a media statement that holding exams in the time of a pandemic is not in the best interest of the students and that it would be best to postpone it. He urged that the final year examination and all other non-certifying tests be deferred till further notice. Deshmukh has also asked the University to allow the first and the second-year students to study the next year’s curriculum.

He further urged that the internships for the final year students should be started so that their further education is not hampered. And once the spread of the virus in the state is contained, only then the examinations should be conducted.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had earlier asked all the states in the country to conduct final exams before September 30. Keeping Maharashtra’s COVID-19 crisis in mind, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took the decision of not conducting the exams in the state. Moreover, the youth wing of Shiv Sena 'Yuva Sena' and State Minister Aditya Thackeray have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the UGC's decision of conducting exams.
