An ex-professor, aged 40 has been brought behind bars for allegedly cheating approximately 12 students, under the false promise of giving them admissions in Masters courses at eminent colleges in south Mumbai. The police have claimed that he has supposedly collected approximately Rs 9 lakhs from the victims. The accused professor, Sushil Mishra earlier worked at a college in south Mumbai but was wiped off a job last year owing to the pandemic.

Mishra, a resident of Jogeshwari in Mumbai was apparently underground for the last few days and was tracked by the cyber cell of the north region of the city. The authorities added that he used his alleged connections to lure students. He would claim to have links at famous colleges in Mumbai and could help students secure seats in postgraduate courses.

A cyber cell official told a morning daily that a resident from Borivali had filed a complaint with the cell that they were duped of Rs 9 lakhs for admissions of her granddaughter in a revered college. Moreover, the accused provided them with receipts for the payments made. Mishra further weaved his web by arranging online classes. He provided the victim with a user-id and password through which the student was able to attend classes for a week. The student, however, informed the police that these classes were only introductory.

Post this, the professor switched off his phone. Owing to this, the student and her family got in touch with the said college who informed them that they had been conned. The institution told the student that the receipts provided to her were fake. Further investigation into the matter, also brought to light that Mishra had earlier conned another student from Govandi of Rs 6 Lakhs under similar false promises.

An official from the cyber cell has said that the ex-professor has cheated many such students of Rs 3-9 lakh each under the pretext of admissions in management and other postgraduate courses.
