In recent developments, students from state board schools who had failed their classes 9 and 11 examinations last year will have to clear an oral exam either in the school or online, according to a government resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday, July 22.

The schools have been asked to conduct these examinations by August 7. In the past, several parents had written to the government appealing schools to cancel re-examinations and promote all the school going students due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Parents opined that schools should conduct online examinations and should not call students to school even for orals.

The decision to close schools and colleges was taken this year for the safety of students against the backdrop of the pandemic. The education department has also given instructions with regards to admission to the students in their 10th and 12th classes this year. The Department of Education has decided that these students should pass this year on the average of the marks of the session.

It was earlier revealed that many students of 9th and 11th standard had failed. In addition, it was decided to cancel the re-examination due to the surge in the number of coronavirus cases. Protesting against this, teachers' unions along with many parents repeatedly requested to promote the students to 10th and 12th classes. Some parents have also started an online agitation in order to express dissatisfaction regarding the matter.

However, school going students up to the 8th standard have been given admission in the next class. As the parents along with the teacher’s unions have consistently demanded this, and the students' academic year should not be wasted, hence, the education department has instructed the schools to conduct the oral examination of the students by August 7. Therefore, students will have the opportunity to pass the exam once again.
