Candidates appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will find it easier to travel to their respective test centres thanks to five students from the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay (IIT-B).

The IIT-B students have designed a new web portal called EduRide which will bring together volunteers who can arrange transport or drive the students to their test centres.

Registering for EduRide is fairly easy and any NEET or JEE candidate can log in to the portal (http://eduride.in) and enter an address to pick them up from as well as the location of their testing centre. EduRide will then match them with the nearest volunteers to take them to their destination.

This works pretty much like any other ride-sharing app out there, but there’s no financial aspect to this as it is being conducted by volunteers, mostly consisting of existing students as well as IIT alumni. It is said that this portal is seeing nearly 200 entries a day from students.

Kriti Kamna, who handles the publicity of the website said that the EduRide portal will make sure students and volunteers are matched based on their area to make sure the transportation can arrive on time.

Additionally, the students responsible for EduRide are also said to be raising funds to support transportation via non-volunteer sources.

IIT-B issued a clarification that it will merely act as the facilitator of the transportation for the students and will not personally authenticate the credentials of the candidate or the transport volunteer.

Students who expected a postponement of the NEET and JEE examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic learnt that the examinations would go on after the Supreme Court permitted the Central Government to conduct in-person examinations.

“To help the JEE (Main) and NEET candidates in various locations across the country, several students and alumni of IITs, including those of IIT-B, have come forward to connect needy candidates with the volunteers willing to help in transport or monetarily through an online portal http://eduride.in. I request volunteers to help in providing transport to the needy candidates in their neighbourhood. Let us all help the future engineers, doctors and scientists of India,” IIT-B Director Subhasis Chaudhuri said.
