As the nation struggles to protest against the Centre’s decision to conduct the JEE and NEET examinations, six states, which includes Maharashtra, have now moved to the Supreme Court seeking review of its initial order in favour of conducting the examinations in the month of September.

On Friday, August 28, six ministers from non-BJP states filed a review petition in the apex court in a bid to seek review of its order allowing the Centre to conduct the JEE and NEET entrance examinations this year amidst the pandemic.

The review plea has been filed by ministers from Maharashtra (Uday Ravindra Sawant), West Bengal (Moloy Ghatak), Jharkhand (Rameshwar Oraon), Rajasthan (Raghu Sharma), Chhattisgarh (Amarjeet Bhagat), and Punjab (BS Sidhu).

Earlier on August 17, the SC had rejected a petition filed by several students seeking cancellation of the exams further stating that the NEET for medical admissions and the JEE examinations for IIT admissions would be held as per the scheduled schedule. As per the schedule, the JEE examinations are to be held from September 1 to 6 and the NEET exam is to be held on September 13.

In the midst of the ongoing struggle, the Congress, spearheaded by Sonia Gandhi, announced its plan to hold countrywide protests on Friday in order to oppose the decision of the government to hold NEET and JEE examinations in view of the pandemic and the surge in the number of cases of coronavirus.

Moreover, several political leaders have joined the bandwagon and demanded the postponement of the examinations. Leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, and even Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy have appealed to the Centre with regards to the demands of students. Swamy had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to postpone NEET/JEE and other competitive examinations till Diwali at least.
