According to a latest development, it has come to light that the National Education Policy (NEP) for schools will not be implemented in the coming academic year (2023-24) and next year (2024-25).

Therefore, class 10 and 12 students will write their board exams according to the existing pattern for two more academic years.

This development came after the state last week set up a steering committee headed by the education minister to adopt NEP as per the state’s needs.

Moreover, several teachers, students and parents were confused if Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams will be held in the academic year of 2023-24.

Clarifying further, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education chairperson Sharad Gosavi said that the state is in the process of adopting the NEP but it will not be not applicable in the academic year 2023-24.

It is pertinent to note that schools in the state reopening on June 15 (except those in Vidarbha which will start on June 30) and uncertainty over the implementation of the NEP that recommends replacing the 10+2 education structure with the 5+3+3+4, including revamping Class 10 and 12 exams.

The 5+3+3+4 education structure is being wrongly interpreted by the various stakeholders, especially parents. The five-year foundation level includes three years of pre-primary and two years of primary. Parents are mistaking it for five years of primary (Class 1 to 5), followed by three years of Class 6-8 and three years of Class 9-11, he further explained.

Schools too are unclear about the new education policy and its implementation in the coming academic year. As per the new education system, school will have to make way for Class 5 in the primary section and getting to move will be a task. As of now, Class 5 in most schools operates in the secondary section. In addition, schools will have to make way for Class 11 and 12 too.

Principals said the most important aspect of the new education policy is teachers’ training.

Meanwhile, NEP for higher education rolls out this year in the state with the four-year undergraduate degree courses. Seven city colleges are currently ready to move from the 3+2 structure to the 4+1 pattern. With degree courses admissions underway, many city colleges are still compiling their list of minor programmes.
