On Monday, April 12, the Maharashtra government postponed the state board examinations of Classes 10 and 12, which were scheduled to be held this month, in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

The state government further stated that it would not want to jeopardize the safety of the students by holding the examinations as of now. The government had earlier cancelled tests for Classes 1 to 8. Moreover, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has instructed the education department to make SOPs in the last week of May and in June in order to safeguard the students from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A meeting of the education department was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Minister of School Education Varsha Gaikwad, Minister of Tourism Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of State Bachchu Kadu, Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte, Additional Chief Secretary of Shalesh Education Department Vandana Krishna, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Ashish Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary Vikas Kharge, Secretary Abasaheb Jarhad, Board of Secondary Higher Secondary President Dinkar Patil and Rajendra Pawar was also present.

Furthermore, CM Thackeray with regards to the situation across the state added that the number of centres should be increased, school and college buildings should be fixed, large halls should be found in order to conduct the examinations and keep the students at a safe distance, cleanliness of examination centres, toilets, disinfection should be taken care of. Meanwhile, additional manpower should be arranged for conducting the examinations. In the meantime, all the staff-officers in the examination system and the staff in the supervisory system should be vaccinated.
