The Maharashtra Government has announced that it will promote Class 10 (SSC) students given the situation around the coronavirus pandemic. The students will be evaluated based on their performances in Class 9 and 10.

The decision was made after a meeting between Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad on Thursday, May 27.

“We will be considering the performance of each and every student, based on which they will be promoted. For this, the department will evaluate the performance of the students in Class 9 and 10 and only then they will be promoted,” a senior official said.

The State Government had previously cancelled board examinations for Class 10 students but it received a strong rebuke from the Bombay High Court. It is said that the School Education Department has already held discussions with the State Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, while an affidavit is expected to be filed with the HC soon.

“The state believes that the Covid-19 situation has put the lives of children at risk. It is also said that the third wave is going to be dangerous for children. We are all going to explain all this to the HC,” the unnamed official added.
