On Thursday, May 20, the Bombay High Court lashed out at the Maharashtra government over the cancellation of the Class 10 examinations, saying it was making a mockery of the education system.

According to reports, a division bench of Justices S J Kathawalla and S P Tavade sought a reply as to why the decision to cancel the state board exam should not be set aside. The bench was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by Dhananjay Kulkarni, challenging the decision of the government made back in April to cancel the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations in view of the outbreak of coronavirus and the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, as the COVID-19 cases across Maharashtra and Mumbai are on a decline, the court also asked why the government decided to cancel the class 10 examinations and not the examinations for class 12. Furthermore, the bench directed the state government to file an affidavit explaining why the court should not set aside the decision to cancel the SSC examinations and posted the matter for further hearing next week.

On the other hand, due to the pandemic, the common admission process for central universities, postponement of school exams, are all in limbo with the government delaying a concrete decision regarding the same. Moreover, a government panel of vice-chancellors had submitted its report in April, supporting a common entrance exam for undergraduate courses, and a similar process for postgraduate courses at the more than 40 central universities. The education ministry, however, is yet to make a decision.

In addition, officials have stated that this year, the admission is facing two challenges, namely, the outbreak of the coronavirus and the spike in COVID-19 cases. In addition, the delay in school board examinations and the possibility of declaring school board results via schools’ internal assessments make it more subjective.
