Maharashtra's Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant, had recently recommended the need of a Marathi language university in the state, and this decision was taken based on the presence of other language universities present across India, in respective state.
Understanding the same, the state government has decided to set up a Marathi language university in Maharashtra and the language advisory committee had earlier passed a resolution in its meeting held on February 1, 2013 in Pune.
Reports state that there are Hindi language universities in Wardha, Telugu universities in Andhra Pradesh and related language universities in other provinces. Accordingly, the state government is trying to have a Marathi language university in Maharashtra as well, said Uday Samant.
Review of the recommendations and resolutions of the Language Advisory Committee appointed by the Government will be conducted to decide the policy of Marathi language in the State of Maharashtra, and the State Government will constitute a committee at the earliest to make recommendations on matters.
The Government of Maharashtra will establish the best Marathi language university in the country that will beautify Marathi in the state.
Proceedings for this will be started at the earliest, said Samant in the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly. The demand for an independent university for Marathi in the state has been going on for the last 80 years, i.e. since pre-Independence times. The demand for the establishment of a Marathi University after the establishment of Maharashtra was made many times, but, in the last 60 years, the decision had not materialized.
