The Maharashtra government has announced the launch of a revised curriculum for Class 1 and the implementation of a Holistic Progress Card (HPC) system for all state board schools starting this academic year. This marks the start of a phased plan to fully implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by the academic year 2028–2029.

The Holistic Progress Card is designed to be more than just academic scores. It will assess students on multiple aspects such as cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. It will offer a broader picture of a child's growth and abilities.

The new curriculum follows the NEP's 5+3+3+4 structure. This structure divides school education into four stages. The Foundational stage includes five years, the Preparatory stage covers three years, the Middle stage consists of three years, and the Secondary stage is four years.

The first group of students to be assessed using the Holistic Progress Card will be the Class 1 batch of the 2025–2026 academic year. This was confirmed in a resolution issued by the state government on Monday, July 14. As per reports, training sessions and orientation for teachers will begin later this year.

The revised curriculum was prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). It is based on the framework provided by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The focus is on improving literacy and numeracy, promoting logical thinking, and reducing the overall content load.

The textbooks will be developed by the state textbook bureau, Balbharati. These books will be adapted from NCERT content to suit the specific needs and context of Maharashtra. It will not be just about changing the content but also the way students learn and how they are assessed.
