Maharashtra: Marathi mandatory in all schools till Class 10th

The Maharashtra government has issued a notification announcing the implementation of Marathi as a compulsory subject in all schools till 10th standard. The regional language will be made compulsory even for schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, IB and other boards. 

“As per the legislation to make Marathi compulsory in all schools of any mediums in the state, the school education department has issued a government decision to implement it from the academic year 2020-21,” Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted in Marathi. 

The state school education department announced that making Marathi compulsory will be done in phases. The notification by the education department said that the students in 1st and 6th standard will have to study Marathi for 2020-21 academic year. 

The implementation of Marathi will involve two classes each year. For the academic year 2021-22, the students in 2nd and 7th standard will be mandated to study Marathi followed by 3rd and 8th stranded in 2022-23, 4th and 9th stranded in 2023-24 and 5th and 10th standard students will be mandated to study in 2024-25. 

The notification read that students studying Marathi from 1st to 5th standard will be made to focus on skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Meanwhile, students from 6th to 10th standard will focus on self-expression and comprehension. 

No exemptions have been made for students coming from other states but those hailing from foreign countries can have certain exemptions, the notification said. 

Earlier, during the Maharashtra legislature session, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) proposed the legislation to make Marathi as a compulsory subject in all schools across the state. The bill was passed unanimously making the learning and teaching of Marathi mandatory.

The Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Bill, 2020, has a provision for a penalty in case of non-compliance by the schools.
