Under the unlock 4.0 guidelines issued by the government, MHA had given permission for the schools to start from September 21 for Standard 9-12. However, observing the increasing coronavirus cases in mind, State Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, on Monday, September 14, 2020, said that it is not possible to start schools in Maharashtra.

The central government in August 2020 issued a new set of guidelines which allowed some services to resume in September. However, the government asked the respective states to decide regarding the same, considering the COVID-19 conditions, and Maharahstra's education department recently held discussions to understand the matters with the experts, and a decision to not open the schools was taken unanimously.

Moreover, it is reported that the teachers and administrators have objected the decision to start the schools immediately as the coronavirus cases are increasing significantly both in urban and rural areas. This matter will be discussed in detail at the state cabinet meeting, but authorities are not in favour of starting school by the end of September. Gaikwad further added that this is a question related to the health of the students and keeping the spread in mind, it is dangerous to call them to school.

The state health department on Monday, September 14, revealed that a total of 15,789 patients were discharged in one day, taking the tally to 7,55,850 COVID-19 patients who were fully recovered. The recovery rate in the state currently stands at 70.16 per cent. Besides this, a total of 17,066 new cases were recorded in the state on Monday, taking the tally to 10,77,374. With 29,894 COVID-19 deaths reported in the state, the case fatality rate in the state is at 2.77 per cent. Four divisions in Maharashtra have more than one-lakh cases, and the numbers have risen significantly in the last few weeks.
