CM Uddhav Thackeray-led government in the state along with the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) recently cancelled the Maharashtra Engineering Service Pre-Examination and the Maharashtra Secondary Service Non-Gazetted Group B Joint Pre-Examinations. As per reports, these have been pushed from the earlier scheduled dates in November.
The information was shared through official communication after the state government had cancelled the exams scheduled on October 11. Over 2.6 lakh students from all over the state were expected to sit for this examination. New examination dates will be announced soon.
The decision was taken after thorough consideration with the ministers, keeping the ongoing issues regarding the Maratha reservation in mind. As per recent reports, leaders representing the Maratha community met the officials and also warned about strict steps if the reservation was not considered.
Considering all odds, officials called a cabinet meeting on Friday, October 9, 2020, to discuss the matters. The same was held under the leadership of CM Uddhav Thackeray, and the ministers unanimously decided to cancel the exam. In an interaction with the media, CM said that the MPSC exam was postponed keeping students' safety in mind, due to the outbreak of coronavirus, further adding that the students demanded the same for safety reasons, and as they weren't able to study due to the pandemic.
Assuring the students further, he said that all the candidates who have applied for the same and were eligible to appear for the scheduled date will be permitted on the new date. Concerns regarding their permissions will be addressed.
While the government has considered giving Maratha reservation a thought for the examination, leader of Bahujan Aghadi, Prakash Ambedkar has expressed his concerns stating that the government decided to cancel the MPSC exam considering only one caste, and has not addressed or answered the questions of the remaining 85 per cent students
