The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to start six more Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in the next academic year (2024-2025). For the new academic year in these schools, the Administrative Education Department had received more than 4,000 applications for 868 seats.

Apart from state-board schools, the civic body also runs 11 CBSE, one Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) schools.

There are 40 seats for each civil-run CBSE school, of which 10% are filled on the recommendation of the Mayor while 5% are reserved for children of civil servants and 34 seats are open to the public.

Students selected through lottery system

"We had to organise a lottery system to allot seats in these schools for the new academic year 2023-24. During "Mission Pravesh" we observed that more parents are willing to get admission for their student in a non-state board school. So we decided to introduce more new CBSE schools in our 5 - 6 school buildings, which will be ready this year," said a senior civic official.

Estimated budget is INR 3,347 crore

CBSE schools offer free education to children from Kindergarten to Class 7. Teachers trained in CBSE syllabus are teaching in schools at Pratiksha Nagar - Sion, Bhawani Shankar Marg - Dadar, Poonam Nagar - Jogeshwari, Jankalyan - Malad, Tunga Village - Kurla, Chembur, Rajawadi School Ghatkopar, Hariyali Village - Vikhroli.

The budget estimate for the financial year 2023-24 is INR 3,347 crore as against INR 3,370 crore for the previous financial year. The Government of Maharashtra has approved civic-run CBSE and ICSE schools to run on self-financing basis in 2022.
