Amidst the coronavirus crisis, schools in Mumbai are to remain shut till December 31, 2020, as per recent reports.

On Friday, November 20, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, informed the same. This development comes days after the Delhi government announced all schools to remain shut in view of the COVID-19 situation. However, schools in other parts of Maharashtra can reopen on November 23, as directed by the state government.

Schools in Mumbai along with the rest of Maharashtra were earlier scheduled to reopen from November 23. Moreover, earlier on November 10, the Maharashtra School Education department had announced a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in view of reopening schools in the state.

According to the previous notice, the students are to attend school on alternate days in order to ensure a 50 per cent attendance. In addition, the guidelines stated that a regular school day will span not more than four hours. However, no lunch break is to be provided to the students.

The Maharashtra School Education department, amidst the COVID-19 crisis, has also asked for parental consent before permitting students to return to schools. This means that attendance will not be compulsory for the students and they will be given a choice to study from their homes. As per reports, online and offline timetables are to be prepared by every school in order to guarantee that core subjects such as Maths, Science and English are taught physically whereas the rest of the subjects are taught in online mode. Moreover, teachers who will attend the schools will have to undergo an RT-PCR test for the coronavirus in order to ensure safety for the students.
